The Workhouse

Bank holiday Monday Joe and I went off to visit  Southall Workhouse owned by the National Trust.  It was a great afternoon out even though it was a bit damp at times.  It was our first visit which I can recommend it as a place to go. Although I’ve heard and read a lot about this it is still hard to believe that the treatment of the poor of our society was so harsh  and that this system was still in place less than 100 years ago.  As if people became destitute on purpose!!  It was extremely interesting to be able to see and hear accounts of what life was like in such an institution but sad at the same time.

It reminded me of 2 Workhouse that were converted into hospitals after the the system changed on the 1st April 1930 – the former Uttoxeter Road Workhouse Derby became the Manor Hospital  in 1948 & Watford Union Workhouse after 1948 was know as Watford General Hospital although as a child it was always referred to as  Shrodells hospital.  The older people of society when I was younger still remembered these places as workhouses and the stigma that was attached and hatted having to be admitted to either.

Card I made using Apothecary Art stamp set & Labels collection framelits from Stampin Up at an all day workshop I attended with my friend Pam some time ago. Elvi hosted the day at Riddings and it was facilitated by my up liner Tracey.

It was a wicked day the food organised by Sue and Elvi was superb shame both Pam and I were on a diet. The day ended up with the local fire fighters attending because the steam from the tea urn set the fire alarm off – it was my fault to as I turned up the temperature of the urn to make the water hotter. But my there were a handsome bunch – I’ve never apologised or grovelled so much as I felt awful as if was a false alarm.

thanks for taking the time to visit my blog

Beautiful card Lesley. My son was born 50 years ago in the Grove, Shardlow, which had formerly been the Workhouse. Sadly it has been replaced now with houses/apartments!

Hi Lesley
Thank you for leaving a comment over on the Creative Minds Craft Group blog, you would of course be made most welcome. We have some basic supplies and if you have your own tools great then bring them along but again we can supply these. The cost of the evening is £5 and this week the theme will be shaped cards. I have some templates for different shaped cards which i will bring with me and then you can just make your cards with the materials available. Let me know if you need any more info but if not we will see you on Tuesday

Saw your comment on the Creative Minds Craft Group blog, but I think Anne and Sylvia have already answered your question. You are more than welcome to come along and see what we are all about.

Hopefully we will see you sometime. XX
